Runway Rave

A big part of any subculture is the music people in it listen to. Vivienne Westwood had strong ties to legendary punk group the Sex Pistols, even designing their outfits. In the 1990s a group called The Prodigy surfaced in the underground British rave scene. Westwood was a big fan of their work. The result was a performance by The Prodigy on the MTV channel as models wearing Vivienne Westwood clothing walked across the stage.

As models walked the runway in Westwood’s designs The Prodigy’s music amplified the show’s atmosphere of defiance and spectacle. This highlighted how both Westwood and the band challenged cultural norms in their own industries. By bringing live electronic music into a high fashion setting, Westwood reinforced her reputation for turning runway shows into rebellious cultural events rather than traditional fashion presentations.
